Alcantara Care for a Custom Carbon Steering Wheel: The Right Everyday Habits

Alcantara care on a custom steering wheel often comes up in the questions of customers who have just received their custom carbon steering wheel. The material is beautiful to the touch, it catches the light differently from leather, but it requires special attention to stay impeccable for years. Here are the habits that make the difference, material by material.

Why Alcantara care on a steering wheel requires special attention

Alcantara is a microfiber textile, not a leather. Its velvety surface holds dust and absorbs moisture from the hands much faster than a smooth covering. A simple wipe with a dry cloth, passed regularly in the direction of the fibers, is enough to keep its original grain. For a more stubborn stain, a slightly damp cloth and a neutral soap, never solvent or alcohol-based products, clean the area without leaving a halo. Drying must always be done in open air, away from a direct heat source such as the cabin heater in full sun, which stiffens the fiber and dulls its color over time.

On our custom steering wheel for Porsche 911 (991/992), Panamera, Macan, Cayenne, 718 Cayman and Boxster, Alcantara covers the entire gripping area while carbon stays on the spokes and the upper rim. This split is not only aesthetic. It places the material most sensitive to friction where hands sweat the most, and the carbon, far more resistant to wear, on the areas of indirect contact.

Twill carbon or forged carbon: two materials, two care routines

Twill carbon, recognizable by its crisp crossed weave, and forged carbon, with its marbled, irregular look, are both protected by a layer of clear coat. It is this layer that does all the work. It makes the fiber impervious to perspiration and UV. A dry microfiber cloth is therefore enough to remove dust, and a little soapy water for fingerprints. Absolutely avoid abrasive products, scouring sponges or standard car waxes, which can end up clouding the clear coat over the passes.

Twill carbon is found, for example, on our custom carbon steering wheel for Mini Cooper, Cooper S and JCW F56, with its regular weave clearly visible under the clear coat. Forged carbon, for its part, gives a more textured rendering, unique to each steering wheel. This is the case on our custom forged carbon steering wheel for Audi R8, TT, TTS and TTRS MK3, where the bluish fiber fragments create a pattern that exists in only one copy.

Perforated leather and TXCP paddles: finishes not to be neglected

Perforated leather, often paired with carbon on the spokes, is cleaned like any quality automotive leather. A soft cloth, a silicone-free cleaning milk, and above all no direct application of product on the perforations, which could clog over time. On a custom steering wheel for Golf 7 GTI and Polo 6, where perforated leather often frames a carbon rim and colored stitching, regular care prevents the leather from cracking prematurely at the flex points. The TXCP paddles, generally in aluminum or rigid carbon, require very little care. A wipe is enough, the main thing being to check from time to time that their fixing remains tight after several thousand kilometers.

Habits to avoid day to day

A few reflexes damage a custom steering wheel faster than normal use ever would. Parking the car in full sun without a reflective windshield sunshade exposes the steering wheel to temperatures that accelerate the aging of the clear coat and the Alcantara. Using a scented wet wipe from the store, often loaded with alcohol, dulls the material in a few passes. And driving with very greasy hands or hands covered in sunscreen fouls the Alcantara fibers deeply, far more than simple road dust.

Simple, regular care, a few minutes each week, is enough to keep a custom carbon steering wheel in the condition it arrived on the first day.
