Choosing a BMW carbon steering wheel starts with a single question: which chassis generation is parked in your garage? At BMW, the steering wheel, its airbag and its controls change from one generation to the next. A 3 Series E90 and a 3 Series G20 share the same name but do not accept the same steering wheel at all. Here is how to identify yours and which finishes suit each era best.
BMW designates each generation with a letter followed by two digits. The letter E roughly corresponds to models produced until the early 2010s, the letter F to the following generation, and the letter G to current BMWs. This code appears in the service booklet and on many sales documents, and it can be retrieved from the vehicle's serial number (VIN). The year alone is not always enough, because some ranges changed generation during the year.
This is precisely why we work on the original manufacturer OEM base. The steering wheel you receive keeps the structure, the connectors and the airbag location that BMW designed for your exact generation.
The E generation covers cars that have become highly sought after: 3 Series E90, E91, E92 and E93, 5 Series E60 and E61, 1 Series E81, E82, E87 and E88, but also X5 E70, X6 E71 and X1 E84. The original steering wheel of these models often ages badly, with leather polished by years of driving. Our custom carbon steering wheel for the BMW E Series keeps the original base and its steering wheel controls, with a perforated leather grip, a flat bottom and contrast stitching.
In these fairly understated interiors, matte twill carbon pairs particularly well with the period trim and console. Red stitching discreetly recalls the M universe.
The F generation includes the 3 Series F30, F31 and F34, the 4 Series F32, F33 and F36, the 5 Series F10 and F11, the 1 Series F20 and F21, as well as the X1 F48, X3 F25, X4 F26, X5 F15 and X6 F16. These cars have a more modern cabin, with more steering wheel controls, notably the cruise control and speed limiter. The custom carbon steering wheel for the BMW F Series keeps all these functions intact since it is built on the original base.
On this generation, many customers pair forged carbon with an Alcantara grip. The contrast between the marbled pattern of the carbon and the matte touch of the Alcantara works very well, and stitching in M colors highlights the junction between the two materials.
The G generation covers current BMWs: 3 Series G20 and G21, 5 Series G30 and G60, 2 Series G42, 4 Series G22, X3 G01, X4 G02, X5 G05, X6 G06 and Z4 G29. The custom carbon steering wheel for the BMW G Series uses the original base of these models, with a perforated leather grip, a flat bottom and contrast stitching.
Since G interiors are more technological, they can carry bolder choices. Forged carbon with red flecks, for example, echoes the red stitching and red upholstery often found in these cabins. It is also on this generation that adding TXCP paddles makes the most sense for automatic gearboxes.
There is no wrong answer, only a question of style. Twill carbon, with its regular weave, remains the choice closest to the spirit of factory M Performance parts. Forged carbon, with its irregular flecks, makes each steering wheel unique. To go further, our dedicated article compares the two finishes in detail: twill carbon or forged carbon, which custom steering wheel to choose.
Whatever the generation, the original airbag cover and module stay at the heart of the steering wheel. This is what preserves the operation intended by BMW and the steering wheel controls without risky adaptation. We explain why this point is non-negotiable in our article on the essential role of the OEM base.
